Why not cull the Corrella's

The divide between rural and urban attitudes is being highlighted following MP Graham Gunn's comments on culling Corrella's which are a problem to the farmers in his electorate. Just a note 'Farmers' are the people who provide the food you have to have, to supermarkets, butchers, bakers etc. In the same interview Gunn also said he was involved in the restraining or evicting of an animal right's protestor at a rodeo as well. I'm not sure of the total details I wasn't there. Socially in rural communities people know people and even if not by name do acknowledge their existence, the anonominity of urban life does not apply. Urban dwellers your environment socially, economically and media wise is totally different.

It is a far more practical lifestyle and what beasties you can only see in a zoo we can see roaming free. 'Country' people are not rednecks, it is a generalisation and can be funny. We are a minority of the population in South Australia but that does not mean our opinions, knowledge and ideas are wrong. We tend to respect our neighbour's because we are not disassociated by social or media stereotyping. What is an important issue in Adelaide is often totally irrelevant to the country, ie the tramline down King William Street, traffic problems at Footy Park and interest groups promoting and commenting on their issue of choice. The latter is usually an opportunity of association to an item such as the Corrella Cull.

I was fine with it all listening to radio comment and reading about it until I heard the comment saying that it's a typical redneck idea. Emotion should never come into a valid discussion. Raise it or encourage it and a wrath you never imagined can be dumped on you. Why do you think words such as N---GER; W-G; S---TIC have been removed or tempered in public use. Redneck is a non specific word that is lumped on people by where they live. It is about intelligence levels, sexual behaviour with relatives and gourmet dining on roadkill. Bloody hilarious at times, in fact. Never use it in intelligent debate on legitimate subjects. Showing your ignorance, bigotry and lack of ability to communicate sensibly and rationally.

Thankyou for your time and attention, Geoff

Postscript; I am in favour of trapping the birds and selling them nationally and exporting them as pets. It will solve the problem, definately reduce the very cruel ILLEGAL trafficking of native birds. Yes I have even seen this idea pushed before and the same groups and people that are against the culling of the birds by death are against this idea as well. I do not believe ata ll that inaction and never ending surveys and reports will ever do anything about the problem of native wildlife and people coming into conflict. The GST is a classic example of this. It is working, yet lost an election for Hewson who promoted it, was brought in by Howard who denied it and here it is up and running and I just looked up outside and the sky is not falling. Doing nothing but gasbagging and discussing an issue is a major pain to endure as evey bugger is trying to be recorded that they cannot be held responsible or in favour of an action if it goes belly up and fails.

I tend to be against culling, unless of course it is a last resort and nothing else works. I like the idea of trapping the Corellas and moving them elsewhere either selling them as pets or moving them to a different location. I don't know whether this would be enough though.

Take the Koalas on KI for example. The population there is unsustainable and the bush is suffering because of it. In fact Koalas are an introduced species on KI. They have tried sterilisation and re-location. None of this has worked in reducing numbers. Several environment groups have suggested controlled culling, but no one in metro Adelaide or around the world will have a bar of it. I know of intances where people have received death threats for even suggesting a cull of Koalas.

I can say that I am against rodeos though.

Thanks Max, I have to admit it is funny that people against culling Koala's send out death threats. :))
There are probably better words that apply to that, besides Hypocritical and Hilarious. I find Rodeos a conundrum, having been to abatoirs. The smell and scene of the holding pens at rodeos remind me of the less pleasant aspects of those visits. Still nothing like confusing myself.

Great post Geoff. I used to work as a media monitor. Trust me - there are as many 'rednecks' living in the city as there are out in the bush, if you catch my drift. I remember when the culling koala debate was going on. There were reports of tourism being affected because Japanese tourists were so outraged. Hello? You ignore the slaughter of whales for crying out loud!

I really try not to get revved up by media Items but occaisionally the motivation to have a shot back is just too much. I wonder, if Koalas were green and scaly creatures if they would be so popular with 'angst' groups. Thanks Audrey for what you said u and Max just prove that sensationalism is lost on people who are aware of it. Like blaming Fat People on fast food advertising.
